Synopsis Set in a poor Parisian neighbourhood, 'The Class' is a brave experimental film that delivers an unflinching and honest account of life for foreign-born children at a school in a disadvantaged Parisian suburb. Winner of the Palme D'Or at Cannes in 2008 - the first French film in 21 years to win - it's been causing a stir worldwide for its frank and brusquely tender story. Based on the award-winning novel by former teacher, now journalist and critic Francois Begadeau (who stars here as the teacher), 'The Class' uses a documentary style to cover a supposed year in the life of a class of social misfits and ethnic minorities. Representative of the diverse social mix found in Paris's poor inner-cities the classroom is portrayed as a crucible of thought, debate and discussion. Resonant and politically-charged, the edgy hand-held camera work and documentary-style approach used by director Laurent Cantet propels this unusual piece through its low-key and thoughtful narrative. | ||
