Synopsis Winner of a prize at this year's Cannes, this debut feature by Bosnian director Aida Begic tackles the bitter aftermath of the ethnic cleansing of the mid 90s, in a beautifully-filmed tale of courage, fortitude and truth - with a twist of magical realism. Alma is one of the small band of women left alive in Slavno, a tiny village in Eastern Bosnia. With most of the menfolk dead, it falls on her to organise the remaining villagers into a jam-making collective, to try and scrape together some money ahead of the bitter winter. While selling their fruit jams on the roadside, the women encounter two businessmen, who are on their way to Slavno with a tempting proposition for the villagers - to leave the village, in return for a generous sum of cash. But the inhabitants of Slavno have deep reservations about the men, and It takes a huge freak storm to isolate the village and force the men to stay - and experience for themselves, the battle-hardened fortitude and determination of the women of Slavno. | ||
