Synopsis Split in two individual films, here screened as one, Steven Soderbergh's hefty biopic of revolutionary Che Guevara relates just how the Argentinian-born Marxist rebel became one of the key political figures of the 20th century. Soderbergh piles on fascinating detail, without ever overshadowing the sheer presence of his central character, played by Benicio del Toro in a powerhouse performance. Capturing the full spectrum of this mercurial individual's character, he exudes a plausible blend of the humanity, determination and humility that drove Guevara through his tumultuous life. In the first half, rocketing from the 1958 Cuban revolution, Che is the inspiring leader, turned international statesman. The second section charts his decline, his disappearance from view, the failed uprisings, betrayals and stubborness that he ultimately paid for with his life. Soderbergh's magisterial narrative moves with gravitas and authority which, coupled with some blue-chip performances, makes the four-hour 'Che' a compelling experience. | ||
