Synopsis For their ensemble performances in this powerful Second World War story, the lead actors (Jamel Debbouze, Samy Naceri, Roschdy Zem, Sami Bouajila and Bernard Blancan) shared the Best Actor award at Cannes this year. But the real prize came later, when President Chirac watched this heartfelt drama and promptly ordered a pension increase for all of France's North African war veterans. Algerian director Rachid Bouchareb explores the actions of the Moroccan and Algerian men who fought side by side with French soldiers to liberate France from the Nazis, but whose decisive role and great sacrifice have been under-appreciated until now. A must for all, the film has outstanding characters and plenty of war scenes, which are vivid but not gory. | ||
