Synopsis

A cold, grey day in the Mississippi Delta. A concerned neighbour finds Lawrence (Michael J. Smith Sr.) sunk into his armchair and his twin brother, Darius, dead of a drug overdose. Overwhelmed, Lawrence immediately tries to follow suit, with a gun shot to the chest. But he survives - and sets to caring for his bereaved nephew James, whilst continuing his feud with his brother's widow Marlee. This trio of misfits eventually team up to restore a dilapidated petrol station that once belonged to Darius. Raw and tough, 'Ballast' uses hand-held cameras and long, contemplative scenes utilising the stark surroundings of the Delta to capture human drama, despair and hope.
