From a book once banned in its native Russia. David Lean fashioned an epic screen romance that became MGM's second biggest money-maker ever (after <I>Gone with the Wind </I>some 25 years earlier). Cleverly cast, Omar Sharif plays the observer as the Russian Revolution dawns, a man torn between two lovers and his conscience. Critics were initially hostile, but the public flocked, and the movie netted five Oscars, including one for Maurice Jarre's ravishing music.
