Synopsis
Based on real-life events - the 2002 riots in the Indian state of Gujarat - Indian actress Nandita Das makes her directorial debut with this charged ensemble drama, that seeks to provide a balanced view of the bloody riots and their aftermath. Hanif and Muneera return to their home, after the riots, to find it has been raided and destroyed - by their former friends and neighbours. A middle-class Hindu couple, Sanjay and Arati find themselves unwittingly drawn into the fall-out from the events, much to their surprise. Muslim musician Khan Saheb's habit of ignoring religious differences in his Hindu neighbourhood is challenged, while Muslim-Hindu couple, Anu and Sameer, find that they can no longer ignore the clash of their cultures. Through the eyes of these and other protagonists, Das presents a kaleidoscope of ideologies, and a dynamic range of emotion.
