Omar Sharif: A Celebration
USA / 1968 / English dialogue with Unknown subtitles / Colour / Panavision / 155 minutes

Omar Sharif's most deliciously self-effacing starring role, playing handsome American-Jewish mobster Nick Arnstein opposite Barbra Streisand's energeitically driven vaudeville star Fanny Brice. A performance that won Ms Streisand a shared (with Katharine Hepburn) 1968 Best Actress Academy Award. Streisand may have joked about an Egyptian portraying Arnstein (what will my grandmother say?) but Sharif is a revelation under veteran William Wyler's masterly direction, and he sings too! (Omar and Babs reprised their roles seven years later in a less-effective requel Funny Lady.)
