A story of two sisters; Maggie (Cameron Diaz) is a no-hoper who, in the words of her sister, is on the way to becoming a middle-aged tramp, and Rose (Toni Collette) is a successful lawyer whose emotional life is definitely lacking. Inevitably, given their differences, their relationship is one of constant love-hate. But then Maggie happens upon a pile of letters sent over the years from a long-lost grandmother (Shirley MacLaine). She sets off to find her and everything changes. Full of wisecracks, especially from the residents in the grandmother's old folks' community (the old men welcome the sight of Maggie by the pool), this is solid Hollywood entertainment, with the playing of Diaz and Collette a joy to watch.
