Based on a true story, this moving and haunting film was critically-acclaimed upon its release in 2007. Telling the true story of ill-fated adventurer Christopher McCandless, director Sean Penn retraces a wandering road-trip taken by the conflicted and unstable young man. After graduating from Emory University, top student and athlete McCandless (Emile Hirsch) abandoned his possessions, gave his entire $24,000 savings to charity and hitchhiked to Alaska to live (and ultimately die) in the wilderness. On his way, he wanders through the lives of a variety of characters, each of whom attempts to offer McCandless some insight and clarity to life. Playing the lead, Emile Hirsch captures all the arrogance, integrity, naiveté and charm of this complex, troubled young man, whilst stellar support comes courtesy of a superb cast including Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt, Catherine Keener, Hal Holbrook and Vince Vaughn.
