MY JOY

Synopsis

A gritty, challenging work from one of the new wave of Eastern European directors, 'My Joy' is a radical and bold film that reflects the grim realities of contemporary life in modern Russia. Georgy is a morose truck driver lost in the rural heartlands of Russia. Ending up in a small village, he encounters a series of diverse characters each of whom offer a distinct perspective on life. From the old war veteran to the teenage prostitute, duplicitous policemen, to a violent gang of hobos, Georgy's story soon comes to mirror a disorientated society that is out of control. Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa previously directed hard-hitting documentaries. With 'My Joy', he draws on his personal experiences travelling through the vast Russian countryside in this gripping, neo-realist account of morality, alienation and identity.
