Synopsis

Red Dust is an intense, elegant thriller set during South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation hearings. The powerful story blends masterfully developed characters, brought to life by the brilliant Chiwetel Ejiofor (Dirty Pretty Things) and Oscar-winner Hilary Swank, with serious political and ethical questions. The performances, first seen at the Toronto International Film Festival, have already elicited calls for the Oscar consideration. Red Dust has been selected for this festival because it is the finest new film to emerge from South Africa, a country that personifies cultural dialogue and forgiveness. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, initiated by Nelson Mandela's post-Apartheid government, allowed South Africa to avoid the cycle of revenge and recrimination inherent in most human conflicts. We are proud to screen Red Dust as DIFF's closing Gala and honor its message of Intercultural reconciliation.
