TULPAN
Winner of Muhr AsiaAfrica / Feature /Best Actor: Askhat Kuchinchirekov (Actor / Actress)
Synopsis
Asa (Askat Kuchinchirekov) lives in Kazakhstan's Hunger Steppe, in a yurt with his sister and her family. By day, Asa is rather unsuccessfully learning to be a shepherd, under the tutelage of his brother-in-law Ondas. He is far more concerned with wooing the beautiful young Tulpan, with whom he is utterly smitten. From regaling her bemused parents with tall tales detailing his supposed exploits in the Navy, to dealing with Tulpan's withering verdict that his 'ears are too big', Asa's life simply won't be complete until he gets his girl. But in the wild, desert sands, there's a wind of change blowing, and Asa has to confront his future. Does he stay in the harsh terrain of the steppe, or try his luck as a truck driver in the city? And will Tulpan finally fall for his charms?
