Set in a grim, post-apocalyptic future, the Earth's population is forced to exist uneasily underground, due to lingering contamination from the mysterious virus that wiped out most life on Earth in 1996. Forty years on, and the survivors send a convict, Cole (Bruce Willis) back in time to try and obtain a sample of the virus with which scientists can create an antidote to 'disinfect' the planet. But time-travel is an imprecise science, and Cole ends up in 1990s Philadelphia, where he is sectioned and declared insane, before accidentally being rocketed back to World War One trenches. Finally, he arrives in 1996 and begins his search for the truth. But as reality, hallucination, identity and madness blend into a maelstrom of chaos, can Cole save the world from a plague-ridden death?
