Synopsis

This powerful meditative reflection on the complexities and ironies of war is based in the western frontier of the USSR under German occupation and Belarus local partisans are fighting a brutal resistance campaign. Innocent Sushenya is arrested along with a group of train saboteurs, but is set free. As rumours of Sushenya’s apparent treason spread, the partisans Burov and Voitik emerge from the forest seeking revenge. Deep in an ancient forest the line between treason and heroism gradually but inexorably blurs.
