WHEN DID YOU LAST SEE YOUR FATHER?
Synopsis
Based upon writer Blake Morrison's bestselling memoir of his father, this film explores the love-hate relationship between Blake (Colin Firth) and his dad, Arthur (Jim Broadbent), shown as a series of flashbacks to memories of his 1950s boyhood (eight-year-old Blake is played by Bradley Johnson) and 1960s adolescence (Matthew Beard plays the teenage Blake) in rural England, as he visits his father, who is dying of cancer. We see the ambiguous relationship between the pair: the rakish, philandering and dominating Arthur, full of dodges and bluster (marvellously brought to life by Broadbent), and Blake, aggravated by lack of recognition for his success as a writer, and constantly troubled by the way Arthur even interfered with his love life.
