This is surely Stone's homage to the resilience of men under extreme circumstances. Based on the true story of two New York Port Authority policemen (played by Nicolas Cage and Michael Pena) who were trapped under the rubble of the World Trade Center on 9/11 and survived, it dramatizes the courage of the men, pinned down by concrete and steel, struggling to keep awake (falling asleep would have meant certain death from cold), and the rescuers who risked their lives to save them. Cutting between the cops and their families, anxiously waiting for information in the chaos that followed the attacks, Stone here continues to reflect on male violence and bravery.
