The DIFF Young Journalist Award is a programme designed to provide selected media students with the exciting opportunity to participate in the festival under the guidance of a mentor.  The group will work as part of an editorial team and are required to cover various aspects of DIFF including press conferences, screenings and panel sessions.  They are set assignments and deadlines; receive feedback from professional film critics and journalists; and contribute towards the DIFF Daily publication.  

This year’s mentor is Colin Brown – formerly with Screen International and a freelance film consultant.

To apply to the DIFF Young Journalist Award:

  • Students must be enrolled in at least one of the following courses at a university in the UAE: Journalism, Film Studies, PR, Photo Journalism, Photography or Mass Media and Communications.
  • They must be available to attend all the days of the festival which takes place from the 6th to the 14th of December, 2013 from 9am – 7pm.
  • Students should either submit an original piece of written work in Arabic or English that is no more than 500 words.  The submissions should be a good reflection of their journalistic skills in terms of seeking out stories and then communicating that and of course film reviews or film-related topics.  For students of Photo Journalism or Photography, they should submit examples of their work but the files should not exceed 2MB.

DIFF will select up to 10 participants.

At the end of the programme, the DIFF Young Journalist Award is presented to the participant that demonstrates outstanding talent, commitment and promise for a future career in the industry.
