    In New York, Lola (Laura Ramsey), 25, dreams of becoming a dancer but is stuck in a boring job. Then she falls in love with an Egyptian, Zack (Assaad Bouab). When he suddenly flies home, Lola follows him to Cairo. But they argue and she is left stranded. She seeks out Ismahane (Carmen Lebbos), the famous dancer her best friend Yussef has told her about. Lola persuades the reclusive Ismahane to tutor her. She blossoms as a dancer and Ismahane rediscovers self-esteem. But Lola's burgeoning stardom strains their friendship. Nabil Ayouch, who delighted us with Ali Zawaya, returns with a sentimental, East-meets-West comedy.

    Giuseppe and Yussef are fishermen, friends and partners. Giuseppe is Sicilian whereas Yussef was born in Tunisia but has been living in Italy for 20 years. They fish every day on the southern Mediterranean, between Sicily and Tunisia. One day, the news announces that the police are searching for an Arab terrorist involved in the Madrid bombings, called Yussef Ben Ali, just like the fisherman. They start joking about it and the $2m reward, until some evidence Giuseppe finds in Yussef’s pocket makes him believe that his friend could really be the terrorist.

    Nine-year-old Messaoud is a kid from Aubervilliers, a Parisian suburb. Because his mother is ill, his father is obliged to leave him in a foster family’s care. It is 1960, and events in Algeria are hitting French headlines. Gisèle (Nathalie Baye), Messaoud’s foster mother, decides to hide his true identity from the inhabitants of her cloistered village in Berry. But they’re not the only ones she wants to keep in the dark; most important of all is her husband, Georges (Gérard Depardieu), a former soldier. He mustn’t find out, either. So Messaoud becomes Michel, or more familiarly Michou. And it’s with this affectionate nickname, given to him by Georges and Gisèle, that he discovers rural France. But Gisèle’s lie, soon exposed, endangers this budding relationship.

  • NUITS D’ARABIE (ARABIAN NIGHTS)

    When ticket inspector Georges Turmes first meets Yamina Ben Khouri on the train between Luxembourg City and Bettembourg, she is just another passenger. When he sees her again, she is trying to sleep between some old petrol barrels and an abandoned garage near the railway station. When they run into each other a third time, she is trying to hide in the train toilet, severely beaten up, blood all over face. Georges offers her help, and she accepts, reluctantly – and both their lives will change forever. Then Yamina disappears, leaving Georges completely disoriented. Trying to find her, Georges meets her old acquaintances. The more of them he speaks to, the less he seems to know about her; everybody has a different version of her life. Finally, he is convinced he has to go to Algiers to rescue her.
