Japan/2007/Japanese dialogue with English subtitles/Colour/35mm/138 minutes
Nine-year-old Koichi Uehara finds a mysterious stone on the way back from school. When he washes is at home it falls apart, revealing a fossil of a boy “Kappa” (a mythical Japanese water creature). The Uehara family helps the Kappa come back to life and Koichi names him “Coo”. Coo swims like a frog, sumo wrestles, speaks Japanese, eats everything and absorbs water through his head. Coo becomes part of the family and bonds with Koichi, who does everything to keep him happy. But Coo misses his family, so the pair go on a road trip to find any remaining Kappa. When Coo’s presence is revealed to the world, trouble flares.
“Directed by one of the best contemporary animators, Keiichi Hara, this is a moving tale about friendship, loyalty and family, told with a lot of fantasy, humour and a great eye for detail. A delight for children aged six and above.” – Myrna Maakaron
