THE PEACE TREE

Canada/2005/English dialogue/Colour/Beta SP/48 mins

In present-day Canada, Shazia (Aiishwariya Haran) is Muslim and Kylie (Jacoba Barber-Rozema), her best friend, is Christian. Both dream of celebrating each other’s festivals, Eid and Christmas. Unfortunately their parents do not share their dream. This spurs them to create The Peace Tree, which “highlights the symbols from all cultures and faiths, to reflect the beauty of diversity in unity”.

“Suitable for children aged six and over, this story of tolerance, love, hope and open-minded children has received 11 international awards and triggered the creation of Peace Trees internationally and the creation of the Peace Tree Ambassadors’ Network and a Peace Tree Garden and Pavilion. Thanks to Mitra Sen’s great idea, many children carry today the peace tree message for a better world.” – Myrna Maakaron
