TUYA DE HUN SHI (TUYA’S MARRIAGE)

China/2006/Mandarin dialogue with English subtitles/Colour/35mm/86 mins

In the Mongolian steppes, feisty and hard-working Tuya (Yu Nan) is determined to stay in her home and pastures, but with a disabled husband, Bater, she has to do all the work. He offers to divorce her so that she can find another husband to help her. The wilful Tuya initially refuses, but gradually accepts she has to find a new man, only to find that no suitor will take on such a determined and demanding woman. When the wealthy Baolier finally steps forward as bridegroom and promptly sends Bater to a nursing home, Tuya makes a radical decision.

“Like Season of the Horse, Tuya’s Marriage is also set in the Mongolian steppes and records a fast-disappearing way of life. Laced with humour, its exotic and evocatively filmed location and entrancing central performance have generated wide international appeal, rewarded at this year’s Berlin Festival with the Golden Bear. Director Wang Quanan, while wanting to explore the inevitable, but in many ways tragic, disappearance of a way of life, has created an extraordinary character in the tough and resilient Tuya, and Yu Nan is both beautiful and convincing in the role, for which she was named Best Actress at this year’s Chicago International Film Festival.” – Simon Field
