4 LUNI, 3 SAPTAMANI SI 2 ZILE (4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS)
Romania/2007/Romanian dialogue with English subtitles/Colour/35mm/113 mins
It is towards the end of the Communist era in a small town in Romania. A young student, Gabita (Laura Vasiliu), decides she will terminate her unwanted pregnancy, an illegal act in Romania at the time. With her loyal friend, Otilia (Anamaria Marinca), she decides to have a back-street abortion, helped by a black-market practitioner, a man – for the only price they can afford to pay.
“Brilliantly conjuring up the dour Romania of the 1980s – damp, poorly lit streets and seedy, regimented hotels ¬– the film evokes not just an era but also the terrible ordeal that the two young women have to go through at the hands of the horribly manipulative abortionist, who extorts a terrible price for his service. The winner of this year’s Cannes Palme D'Or, acclaimed as a ‘stunning achievement’ by Variety, Cristian Mungiu’s film has been widely recognised as one of the best of 2007. Like The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (shown at DIFF last year), it brilliantly evokes the atmosphere of a past era in Romania and with its restrained visuals and amazing performances turns an ordeal into a rich and moving cinema experience.” – Simon Field
