AN SEH (Those Three)

Iran/2007/Turkish dialogue with English subtitles/Colour/Beta SP/77 mins

Three Iranian army recruits are at the end of two months’ training – but still 22 months away from demobilisation. They are first seen enjoying a hot spring, relaxing tired bodies. Then, with their troop, they head into an endless countryside blanketed under deep snow. Suddenly, Essi has had enough and escapes with his two buddies – a bid for freedom that begins a struggle for survival in a pitiless environment.

“Naghi Nemati’s film is told through stark images: snowy hillsides, a solitary tree, characters moving in and out of frame, close-up shots set against the sky, long shots with men seemingly stranded on a vast white terrain. His widescreen framing, ably supported by Hooman Behmanesh’s photography, is faultless, rendering images to take the breath away, while Ebrahim Irajzad’s soundtrack of the driving, bitter wind helps seal their fate. This is a remarkable first feature, which bodes well for the new generation of Iranian cinema.” – Sheila Whitaker
