Boston private detective Patrick (Casey Affleck) and his partner, personal and professional, Angie (Michelle Monaghan), are asked by Bea McCready (Amy Madigan) to undertake an investigation into the kidnapping of her niece, four-year old Amanda. Patrick is convinced that by using his contacts in the criminal world he can break the case. Working at odds with and, occasionally, alongside two cops (Ed Harris and John Ashton), Patrick finds himself in a maze of false leads and moral ambiguities.

Set in Boston, it has the crime narrative and the kidnapping of a child as its emotional centre, using them intelligently to draw out family tensions, differing life choices and the impact of drugs on individuals and families. His ability to confront complex emotions in subtle visuals is telling and he elicits tremendous performances, not least from Amy Ryan as the missing girl’s single mother, and his own brother, Casey. This film augurs well for Affleck’s directorial future.”

BEN AFFLECK was born in 1972 in Berkeley, California, but raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He established his acting career in independent films such as Dazed and Confused (1993) and Kevin Smith’s Mallrats (1995) and Chasing Amy (1997). With Matt Damon, he shared the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting (1998), in which they both starred, and he also starred in the blockbusters Armageddon (1998) and Pearl Harbor (2001).
