MARRIED LIFE
USA/2007/English dialogue/Colour/35mm/90 mins
It is America, 1949, and all is well – until happily married Harry Allen (Chris Cooper) tells his lifelong playboy friend Rich (Pierce Brosnan) that he is desperately in love and wants a divorce so as to achieve “complete happiness.” He introduces Rich to his mistress, Kay (Rachel McAdams), naively unaware that this is not a good idea – and when he realises how his wife Pat (Patricia Clarkson) would suffer if they divorced has an idea of how to alleviate her pain – unaware that she, too, has something to hide.
“Love, passion, lust and murder feature in this quietly ironic view of married (and not so married) life, in which nothing is as it appears, not even your spouse. The story is told in retrospect by Rich as he ruminates on strange events amongst the middle class and what ultimately makes for “complete happiness” which, it turns out, is not what we thought it was. Lush period visuals and uniformly solid performances from a great cast invite us to watch the games people play.” – Sheila Whitaker
