Audrey (Halle Berry) and Brian (David Duchovny) are happily married with two young children. One night Brian is shot dead whilst aiding a woman who is being attacked. At the wake appears Jerry (Benicio del Toro), a dishevelled figure amongst the mourners, Brian’s lifelong friend and a long-term drug addict, for whom Audrey never had much time. Eventually, the bereft Audrey invites Jerry to live in her guest house, to try and overcome their mutually desperate situations.

“Compassionate and complex, the film features Halle Berry in a difficult role in which she must convey a woman in grief-stricken stasis, whilst remaining of interest to the audience; in this she convincingly succeeds. Benicio del Toro’s performance is equally remarkable as the junkie who tries to break his addiction. Their gradual and mutual dependency is sensitively rendered, and whilst there is a moment of sexual attraction, the film maintains its portrayal of two people in crisis without resort to an inappropriate romance. Her feature films have garnered huge audiences in Denmark and national and international acclaim, notably the romantic comedy The One and Only (1999), the Dogme drama Open Hearts (2002) and Brothers (2004). After the Wedding (2006) received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign-Language Film. Things We Lost in the Fire is her American debut.
