Fund for European Co-Productions selects Dubai International Film Festival to host 1st international meeting

Cannes, May 20, 2012:  The Dubai International Film Festival announced today that Eurimages - the Fund that supports European film co-productions – will, in an unprecedented move, hold its 129th meeting beyond the borders of its member states, in the United Arab Emirates, during the 9th Dubai International Film Festival (9-16 December 2012).

The groundbreaking decision was made by the Eurimages Board of Management board, which has supported an average of 60 films a year for over 20 years, with an annual investment of €23 million to support co-productions between its 36 European member states.

The fund’s board engaged a study group to assess the value of establishing links with non-European countries

“It is not a coincidence that Eurimages has chosen the Gulf, and the Dubai International Film Festival for the first destination beyond Europe for a meeting of the Board of Management,” said Eurimages. “The Dubai International Film Festival is an ideal venue for anyone looking for professionalism, modernity and worldwide cooperation in the film sector.”
Eurimages continued: “The EurimagesNational Representatives from all the countries of the Fund will have the unique chance to experience the vibrant and inspiring Gulf film scene and meet the local professionals. Supported by the Dubai International Film Festival, a truly creative partner, we believe that our board meeting will be extremely fruitful.”

Shivani Pandya Managing Director of the Dubai International Film Festival said: “We welcome Eurimages into the Middle East and are greatly encouraged by their enthusiasm for Arab filmmakers and content. The presence of additional highly regarded industry professionals and public officers from 36 European nations will bring an inspiring flow of cinematic energy, through the inevitable exchange of knowledge and dialogue bridging many cultures.”

Eurimages, set up in 1988 by the European Council to co-produce, distribute, promote and exhibit cinema works from member nations, has supported more than 1,500 feature films and documentaries, including hundreds that have gone on to win prestigious global prizes including Academy Awards, the Berlin Golden Lion and Cannes Palme d’Or. The fund currently has nine supported films at Cannes 2012, including five in the official competition.

The fund meeting at DIFF is expected to open the storied collaborative platform to Arab content, and help Eurimages members engage with Arab filmmakers and film bodies with a view to potential partnerships and funding opportunities.

The Investment Corporation of Dubai is the title sponsor of the Dubai International Film Festival. The ninth edition of DIFF is held in association with Dubai Studio City. Dubai Duty Free, Dubai Pearl, Emirates Airline and Madinat Jumeirah, home to the Dubai International Film Festival, are the principal sponsors of DIFF. The Festival is supported by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority.
